How to Download Instagram Videos on a Computer
Download public Instagram videos on PC with any browser — no Windows or Mac app, no extension, no login. Paste the link, save the file to your Downloads folder.
You want an Instagram video on your hard drive — for offline viewing, a personal archive, or a project you have rights to use — and you would rather not install random desktop software or browser extensions. On Windows and Mac, a normal browser tab is usually enough: copy a public link, paste it into Video Downloader, and save the file. No Instagram login, no native client, and no account on our site.
This guide covers what you need, step-by-step instructions for Windows and Mac, where files land, and when a dedicated app or extension is actually unnecessary.
What You Need
- A public Instagram video link (Share → Copy link from the post).
- A modern browser: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari on Mac.
- A few seconds of patience while the tool reads what Instagram exposes for that URL.
Does not work: private accounts, removed posts, Stories (use the Story downloader while the Story is live), or profile URLs instead of a specific post link.
Open the Instagram Video Downloader — that is the right tool for standard feed video posts. Reels have their own page at Instagram Reels Downloader if your link contains /reel/.
Windows: Step by Step
- Copy the link — In Instagram on the web or in the app, open the video, tap Share, then Copy link.
- Open the downloader — In Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, go to the Instagram Video Downloader.
- Paste and process — Paste the URL into the box. Wait until a download option appears (usually a few seconds).
- Save the file — Click Download. Your browser saves the file to your default download location.
Tip: If nothing happens, check the browser's download bar (bottom of Chrome/Edge) or press Ctrl+J to open the download list. Tracking parameters on the URL are fine — leave them on.
Mac: Step by Step
- Copy the link from Instagram (Share → Copy link).
- Open Safari or Chrome and visit the Instagram Video Downloader.
- Paste the URL and wait for the video option to load.
- Download — Click Download. Safari may ask where to save; Chrome usually uses your default folder.
On Mac, press Cmd+Option+L in Chrome to jump to downloads, or check the down-arrow icon in Safari's toolbar.
The flow is the same on both platforms — only the browser shortcuts differ.
Where Downloaded Files Are Saved
On Windows, files typically land in:
C:\Users\<YourName>\Downloads
On Mac, the default is:
/Users/<YourName>/Downloads
Both Chrome and Edge let you change the default folder in browser settings. Video Downloader does not install its own directory or background service — your browser handles storage exactly like any other file download.
If you download often, create a subfolder such as Downloads/Instagram and move files there after saving. We do not sync or catalog what you download.
Do You Need Software or a Browser Extension?
Usually no. For public Instagram video posts, a browser-based tool is enough:
| Approach | Verdict for most users |
|---|---|
| Video Downloader in browser | Recommended — no install, no broad permissions |
| Desktop "Instagram downloader" apps | Often unnecessary; many ask for login or bundle adware |
| Browser extensions | Extra permissions on every site; not required for occasional saves |
| Screen recording | Lower quality, includes UI chrome — avoid if a file download works |
We do not ship a Windows .exe, a Mac .dmg, or a Chrome extension. Everything runs in the tab you already have open.

File Format and Available Quality
When Instagram exposes a video file for a public link, it is often available as MP4 — the format most players and editors expect. Video Downloader returns the source files Instagram makes available for that URL; we are not a forced converter that re-encodes everything on our servers.
Quality is source-dependent. You receive the resolution and bitrate Instagram serves for that public post — not an upscaled "HD guarantee." We do not promise 1080p, 4K, or "original camera quality." A sharp upload may look great; an older compressed post may look softer. That is normal platform behaviour, not something we intentionally reduce.
Audio stays embedded in the video file when Instagram includes it in the exposed stream. For separate audio tracks when available, try the Instagram Audio Downloader with the same public link.
FAQ
Can I download Instagram videos on PC without logging in?
Yes — for public posts. Private or login-only content is not supported.
Does this work on Linux?
Any desktop OS with a supported browser works the same way. There is no OS-specific client.
Why did my download fail?
Common causes: private account, deleted post, wrong URL type (profile instead of post), or temporary rate limiting. Copy the link again from Instagram and confirm the post opens in a logged-out window.
Is downloading Instagram videos legal?
Keep files for personal, offline use of content you own or may archive. Copyright stays with the creator; Instagram's terms still apply.
Should I use the video page or the Reels page?
Standard feed videos → Instagram Video Downloader. Reels URLs → Instagram Reels Downloader.
